Stones are one of the most prevalent building material from the olden days due to its availability in abundance from the natural rocks.   • Sandstone

    These are sedimentary rocks and hence stratified. Sandstones consist of quartz and feldspar and are found in various colors like gray, white, red, buff, brown, yellow and even dark gray. These become unsuitable for the building if they undergo weathering. Therefore, it is preferable to use sandstones with silica cement for heavy structures. They are used for masonry work, for dams, river walls, and bridge piers as major construction material.

    These are finely grained metamorphic rocks which constitute of mica, quartz, and clay minerals. They split along the planes of original bedding quite easily. Their color varies from various shades of gray like- dark gray, greenish gray, purple gray to black. Slates are also used as roofing tiles, slabs, and pavements etc.

    These are igneous rocks with a crystalline structure which are fine to coarse grained. Their color varies from light gray to pink. Granites are hard, durable and take polish well and are commonly used as a construction component in institutional and monumental buildings. They are also used as coarse aggregates in concrete.

    Marbles are available in different pleasing colors like white and pink. It is usually used for facing, ornamental works and for columns, steps, flooring, etc. These are one of the most beautiful stones, suitable for the monumental and architectural purpose. If you think it’s just the looks that put the Marble into the spotlight, then you are wrong. It’s coarseness makes it durable against meteoric weathering. There are huge marble deposits of India. The fairly widespread deposits come from the crystalline formation of marble in the state of Rajasthan. The places like Dadikar in Alwar, Mekrana in Jodhpur, Kharwa in Ajmer, Maundla in Jaipur are some of the places from which marbles of diverse varieties of grain and color are obtained. The beautiful white variety of marble which has been used in one of the Seven Wonders of the World- Taj Mahal, also comes from the land of Rajasthan. This was widely used in the Mughal Architecture during seventeenth century due to its accessibility and its incredible beauty.

  • Quartzite

    These are metamorphic rocks which are available in different colors like gray, white and yellow. Quartzites have a fine coarse-grained structure and are mostly in branded and granular form. It is the chief component with feldspar and mica in small quantities, used as a construction material in building blocks and slabs.

  • Limestone

    The sedimentary rocks formed during the sedimentation within the caves, lake floors, and ocean beds. It comprises of crystal forms of calcium carbonate. A high calcium content limestone has 95% calcium carbonate by weight. Its coarse texture makes it weather resistant. Limestone’s chemical and physical properties adds to its versatility and durability. For this reason, it is widely used in the construction of residential projects these days.

  • Laterite:

    The ease of cutting Laterites into blocks and bricks when freshly quarried and its ability to harden with exposure to air, puts it to use as common construction material in building works. It requires skilled workmanship to handle this material. Technological advancement has made the machine cutting of Laterites into required shape of bricks, easier and convenient. The wide distribution of Laterites from Assam to South India makes it extensively used the material for roads. The rising construction costs and an inclination towards locally available products have fuelled its demand in the recent years.
